Cubby T. Clown & Company is a creation
of husband and wife team Chris Durand and Faye M. Ori.
Faye has been performing in community theater
off and on for 30+ years. Chris never had any desire to be on stage
until 1989, when Faye persuaded him to audition for the Londonderry,
NH Music and Drama Companys production of "Oliver".
Chris only got a small part, but he was hooked. It would be several
years before Chriss work schedule would allow him time to perform
again.
When they moved to Watertown, NY some time
later, they both became involved in several productions of the Watertown
Lyric Theater. In 1998 they joined the cast of "Barnum, the Circus
Musical". The director of "Barnum" wanted to continue
to entertain the audience during intermission. Chris, along with several
other cast members, was asked to dress as clowns and perform short skits.
Chris, always a natural clown, took to the
role like a duck takes to water, often staying in character throughout
rehearsals, even when he wasnt on stage. He wore slippers to rehearsal
that looked like bear paws, and with his full beard and 300+ pound frame,
he had the appearance of a bear cub. Before long, the children in the
cast had nicknamed him "Cubby."
At the completion of "Barnums"
run, Chris got a phone call asking him to dress as a clown and embarrass
a woman at her 50th birthday party. To prepare for this appearance,
Chris called on his good friend, Tim Dumas, a professional clown, magician,
and comedian with more than 25 years of experience. With Tims
advice and encouragement, Chris had a successful appearance at the party.
It was now Chriss turn to persuade
Faye to become part of the act. With Tims continued mentoring,
Chris and Faye soon developed the characters Cubby and Cuddles.
Since then, Chris and Faye have continued
to hone their skills, participating in improv classes as well as several
clown and magic seminars. Whenever possible, they enjoy meeting other
childrens entertainers and exchanging ideas.
